Just like humans, pets suffer from various illnesses and health conditions. Fortunately, veterinary medicine has come a long way, and there are now a variety of diagnostic tests available to help identify and treat these conditions that may not be visible to the naked eye.
These tests are used to evaluate a range of biological samples, including blood, urine, and tissue, to identify potential health issues and determine the best course of treatment. In this blog, we will take a closer look at some of the most common pathology tests used in pets, and discuss how they can help improve the lives of our beloved animal companions.
Blood Test- Blood tests are safe and well-tolerated by pets. While performing a blood test, blood is drawn from the pet’s vein, from their leg or neck, and then sent to the laboratory for analysis. Various parameters, such as red blood count, white blood cell count, glucose levels, and liver and kidney function, are measured. Blood tests can also help diagnose conditions like anaemia, diabetes, and liver or kidney disease.
Urine Test- In a urine test, urine is collected in a sterile container and then sent to the laboratory for analysis. The urine test measures pH levels, protein levels, and the presence of bacteria and other substances. A urine test also helps in checking the presence of glucose and ketones. Urine tests help diagnose conditions like urinary tract infections, bladder stones and kidney disease.
Fecal Test- Fecal tests are a part of routine wellness exams and are especially important for pets having a history of gastrointestinal issues. Fecal tests measure the presence of parasites and other microorganisms in the pet’s stool. Fecal tests can also help in detecting the presence of harmful bacteria that can cause diarrhoea, vomiting and other health issues. Fecal tests also provide valuable information about pets’ digestive health and function.
Complete Blood Count (CBC test)- A complete blood count gives the veterinarian information about your dog’s hydration status, anaemia, haemoglobin, blood clotting ability, and immunity. It is an essential test for dogs having symptoms of fever, vomiting, weakness and loss of appetite. CBC also helps in detecting bleeding disorders and other abnormalities.
Blood Parasite Test- In the blood parasite test, 3 drops of blood are used to determine if a pet is infected with a serious parasite like Lyme disease or anaplasmosis.
Skin Test- Skin tests work by introducing small amounts of potential allergens into the skin and then monitoring the reaction. A small amount of each allergen is injected just under the skin, usually on the side of the pet’s chest or abdomen. The area is then observed for signs of a reaction, such as swelling, redness, or itching. Patch tests, on the other hand, involve applying a small amount of each allergen to the skin and then covering it with a bandage for 24-48 hours.
Skin tests help in identifying specific allergens that cause allergies in pets.
